Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Floating Large Woody Debris Impact on a Masonry Arch Bridge

نویسندگان

چکیده

Masonry arch bridges form an essential part of existing transport infrastructure around the world, including mainland Europe and northeastern US. Recent extreme flood events highlight that masonry spanning watercourses are vulnerable to flood-induced hydrodynamic debris impact loads. When flow interacts with bridge superstructure, or without discrete floating debris, a complex interaction is observed. This paper presents both experimental numerical studies investigate this phenomenon, fluid–structure structure–structure interactions. A typical single-span large woody representing tree log investigated. Experimental observations from scaled hydraulic model, in flow, first presented for case where abutment fully submerged. Next, capability method smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulating behaviour observed experiment discussed. Following this, debris-induced pressure–time histories on obtained using SPH model. Results reveal leads significantly more localised load compared situation only.

Deflection Measurement of Masonry Arch Bridges with Tall Piers: Case Study of Shahbazan Bridge

A common practice for detailed assessment of masonry bridges is to use recorded deflection signature of mid-span of such structures due to predefined loading schemes. However, measuring the deflection of bridges with tall piers or those situated over deep valleys introduces certain difficulties, since common deflection-meters require a reference point relative to which the measureme...

Finite Element Modelling Tuned on Experimental Testing for the Structural Health Assessment of an Ancient Masonry Arch Bridge

This paper presents the structural health assessment of a railway ancient masonry arch bridge located in Bologna, Italy. A three-dimensional finite element model of the entire bridge, tuned on in situ experimental tests, has been used for the assessment. In particular, the finite element model has been employed to evaluate the structural health of the bridge both in its actual state and in the ...

Predicting the Recruitment of Large Woody Debris throughout a Watershed

Information about the spatial distribution of riparian vegetation, and the ecosystem services it provides, is required to prioritise the protection and restoration of riparian zones within watersheds. Large woody debris performs a range of fluvial geomorphic and ecological functions within streams. This paper describes a new technique for estimating how much large woody debris is provided by ri...
